Predominantly Orange: DEFWU Defines the Denver Broncos Defense Perfectly

DEFWU Defines the Denver Broncos Defense Perfectly

Hashtag DEFWU has begun to make its way around the internet, courtesy of  Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe.  This is the new brand that Derek Wolfe has concocted and is promoting heavily.  Rumor has it there will even be a line of shirts, apparel and everything in between.  However, DEFWU is far more than just a brand, it is an attitude, a swagger, a quality that defines and fuels this defense.

For those of you that don’t know what DEFWU stands for, it stands for “Don’t Ever F**k With Us,” and it was created by a player that once told Tom Brady he would eat his children.  Derek Wolfe is quickly becoming one of the most valuable members of this defense, and brings an attitude with him, a nastiness, an underdog mentality that ripples through the entire defense.

The Broncos defense is like a Long Island Iced Tea, they have the PERFECT blend of talent and personalities that make them who they are.  Up front they have the professional, veteran leader in Demarcus Ware; the intense, “eat your children” animal in Derek Wolfe; the goofy $70 million man in Von Miller that keeps everyone on the field loose and having fun.  In the middle they

have the leader, Mr. Consistent, Brandon Marshall.  On the back end they have the undrafted, chip-on-the-shoulder Chris Harris; they have the guy that doesn’t ever shut up on the field, the heart and soul Aqib Talib, and then they have the guy always knows how to bring the wood, big hitting T.J. Ward.  There are other great players as well, but  every player mentioned here is a leader on the Broncos defense, and all can play at a Pro Bowl to All Pro level.

Make no mistake, this defense was great last season—historically great.  The performance they delivered in the playoffs was probably the greatest three game playoff run in the history of the NFL, given the quality of offenses they faced, and the fact that they play in this era—an era where every rule is tailored to boost the offense.  But in a way, last year feels like just the beginning.

#DEFWU

This is year two under Wade Phillips, and this group of varied personalities have already taken it extremely personal that the four letter has already written them off.  Analysts have called for 8-8, or 7-9, they can’t do it again.  Chris Harris wants to hear none of that notion:

“I feel like we impose our will on everybody. Everybody has to deal with us. They deal with our rushers and then they have to come out and deal with our passers. That’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to play smash mouth,”

Thus far, the defense has taken it’s toll on all three of the QB’s vying for the starting quarterback job for the Broncos, making each of them look foolish at times on the practice field.  And on the three occasions they have got to line up against a different team, the results have been outright staggering.

#DEFWU

The Broncos got to face the Bears last week in the preseason opener, and have twice lined up against the 49ers in joint practices this week.  The Bears, nor the Niners offenses belonged on the same field with these Broncos.  The Broncos pitched a shutout vs. the Bears, sacking their collection of quarterbacks a total of 7 times.  It didn’t matter that the Broncos were without arguably their 4 best defenders; Demarcus Ware, Von Miller, Chris Harris Jr. and Aqib Talib.  The Broncos were dominant, only allowing the Bears to cross the 50 yard line twice; the longest drive made it to the Broncos 37 yard line.  From the first string to the fourth, the Bears got EMBARRASSED.

The Super Bowl Champs were even more dominant in the joint practices with the 49ers.

This defense will flat out make you want to curl up and die when you have to play them.  As Derek Wolfe put it:

“We have a standard here, and they either buy in or they don’t. They’re either going to buy into that standard or they’re going to get the hell out.”

And buy in they absolutely have.  This defense doesn’t think, they react.  They fly around with reckless abandon, and as Harris said, “impose their will.”

#DEFWU

Mark these words, this defense is better than the 2015 version.  They aren’t out to beat opposing offenses, they are out there to make them look silly.

The defense we all saw in the playoffs that made Roethlisberger, Brady, and the MVP Cam Newton look like normal guys—that is the defense that Broncos Country should expect moving forward, week in and week out.  Saturday night, the world will get to see the 49ers put to shame as they have twice this week.  Get Off Our Field San Francisco!

#DEFWU

When you watch the Broncos defense this year, you may be reminded of a scene from Remember the Titans

This defense will make sure, each and every week, that the opposing quarterback, running back, offensive line, and receivers remember, the day they played the Broncos.  They will make them want to quit.

#DEFWU

Wolfe has the brand, but in reality it belongs to the entire defense.  There is no greater defense in the NFL this season, or perhaps ever for that matter.  Take them lightly and you may not gain a yard all game.  Give them your best shot, and they will put you on your back.  When challenged, they respond  “Don’t Ever F**k With Us.”  This attitude will certainly bring another Lombardi back to the Mile High City; it’s perfect.
